Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat

Ahmedabad is the largest city of Gujarat and seventh largest city of India is located in the western region of India.

Formerly called Karnavati and home to several independence initiatives, Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in the

year 1411 A.D, when it served as the capital of the Sultanate. A city which was once restricted to the walls constructed by

Ahmed Shah, is today spread over 1300 sq. kms; once a home to the Sultans and Peshwas, is now a commercial city bustling with

activity, a city which deserves a website dedicated exclusively to its news, information and services directory. This

fascinating city is a silent witness of the traditional culture and   ancient history   of Gujarat. The city stands

on the banks of river Sabarmati and is christened by Ahmed Shah, the medieval ruler of Gujarat. Situated on the banks of

the river   Sabarmati, the city is a real portrait of monuments   and palaces of historic importance. It is

the cultural and   intellectual capital   of Gujarat. Ahmedabad was incorporated into the Bombay Presidency during

the British rule but remained the most important city in the Gujarat region. Over a period of time, Ahmedabad established

itself as the home of textile industry and earned the nickname of "the Manchester of the East .   The attention to

detail in Ahmedabad truly makes the sights stand out. The best things to do in this city are that of the more simple kind,

although no one could say Ahmedabad’s buildings celebrate simplicity. This city is highly enjoyed by taking life as it

is supposed to be, like going on nice, soothing strolls around the town. However, those able to swallow the smog will

discover a pulsating Indian city, with a media that preaches tolerance. Ahmedabad is a sky-scraping step-off point to the

rest of Gujarat.

Places to see:

Jama Masjid : Built in yellow sandstone, it combines the best of Hindu and

Muslim styles of architecture, standing on 260 pillars supporting 15 domes at varying elevations It is described as the most

beautiful mosque in India. The vast paved courtyard is a rectangle nearly seventy-five metres by sixty-six metres.

Calico Museum: The museum, set in the verdant Shahi Bagh Garden is spread over 12 rooms on both floors of the haveli.

Calico museum displays outstanding collection of textiles which include royal tents, carpets and costumes; religious

paintings on cloth, embroiders, brocades, Kashmiri shawls and silk weaves are also on display which date back to 17th and

18th centuries.

Gandhi Ashram : Another of the tourist attractions in Ahmedabad is the Satyagraha Ashram, set-up in AD 1920 on

the lull western banks of the Sabarmati River.

Bhadra Fort: Bhadra Fort is one of the prime tourist attractions in Ahmedabad. There are large imperial

palaces within the compound of the fort. The Bhadrakali Mandir situated within the periphery of the fort was built in 1411 by

the Maratha rulers. This is a must-see for the tourists.

Kankaria Lake: The Kankaria Lake offers tourist places of interest like the island garden known as Nagina Wadi, parks, an

aquarium, a boat club, a natural historical museum, and a zoo.   A circular lake constructed in AD 1451 by Sultan

Qutub-ud-din.

How to Reach:

Air:   Indian Airlines connect Ahmedabad with Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Jaipur, Indore and Calcutta.

East West Airlines also connects Ahmedabad with Bombay.

Rail: There are regular trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Vadodara and Udaipur. The Ahmedabad Railway Station and the Maninagar

Railway Station are the two prime railway stations in the city.

Bus: Buses in Ahmedabad are many, and all these buses ply to specific portions of the city from the central bus stand.
